Te Kore (The Void)

Te Kore (The Void) | Electronic - 2007

realised in the Electronic Music Studios at The University of Auckland School of Music, Auckland, 2001

Te Kore is based upon a collaboration called Red Earth, White Yoghurt with butoh artist Gabrielle New for the Wellington Fringe Festival 2001. The premise of Red Earth was personal cultural resonance of the land of one’s birth and how that defines one’s identity. Sonic material was generated for this piece, drawing on visual ideas from the choreography, such as amoebic movement, the opening of a flower and pollen caught on the wind. Te Kore is a recontextualisation of these sonic textures as an evolving form loosely based on the cycle of life and an exploration of Te Kore (the void) as described within Māori cosmology as aconceptof void, nothingness and potential. The piece explores notions of creation, stasis and evolution within the cosmos.
